At this stage, you’re probably occupied with sharing the news with loved ones, basking in sheer joy and happiness, as well as immersing yourself in various stages of wedding planning. There’s so much going on, and I can imagine you’ve got a lot on your plate. It’s daunting, and it can definitely be stressful, but it’s also such an exciting time!

Amidst the whirlwind of ideas, inspiration, and organisation is the decision of whether or not to have an engagement photoshoot. And to be completely honest, the idea of an engagement photoshoot itself might be one that you haven’t considered at all, or perhaps something that you’ve pushed to the back of your mind. That’s completely fine!

As well as being incredibly fun and the perfect excuse to hang out and goof around with your partner, an engagement photoshoot can also have many practical benefits!

Here are 5 points to consider when considering an engagement photoshoot and why it should be higher on your priority list.

1. Having an engagement shoot will enhance your confidence and comfort in front of the camera.

The keywords emphasised here are comfort and confidence because ultimately, that’s what you want to be on your wedding day!

Ideally, you’ll want to be in a position where you completely forget that there’s someone photographing you at all, and that can definitely be a challenge if you’re someone who is camera-shy or even just a little nervous about what to expect.

By having an engagement photoshoot, it’s essentially a trial run before your actual wedding day (that’s not to say it’s any less important, though!). You can experience being directed by someone and practise being present in the moment with your partner. By the end of the session, you’ll have spent quality time with your best friend, have beautiful photos to cherish for many years to come, and be a confident camera superstar! It’s a win-win!

2. It gives you an opportunity to establish a connection with your photographer.

Engagement shoots are the perfect opportunity to not only spend time with a photographer and see how they work, but it’s also a great time to get to know them and see what the vibe is like between everyone!
It might sound cliche, but establishing a connection with your photographer is so important! You want to feel like there is a genuine relationship. That way, when it comes to your wedding day, it feels like another friend is in attendance!

Ultimately, you want to feel at ease and trust the person behind the camera wholeheartedly, and an engagement shoot provides you with that additional opportunity to create and explore that connection.

Bonus Tip: For future reference, if you have a successful engagement shoot and fall in love with your photographer, I would highly recommend you to enquire about their availability as soon as possible to give yourself the best chance of securing them for your wedding date!

3. You can try out your hair and makeup at your engagement shoot!

Not only does an engagement shoot allow you to build rapport with your photographer, but it can also be a super cool opportunity to trial other vendors, such as a hair and makeup artist.

If you’ve got any particular ideas about your hair and makeup but aren’t 100% confident about locking them in for the final wedding look, why not test them out at your engagement shoot?

From lip shades to lighting to testing whether those curls will hold after a frolic on the beach, you can avoid any disappointment that might arise on your actual wedding day by trialling it beforehand. It’s two birds with one stone, and you’re saving yourself additional time down the track!

4. You can incorporate your engagement photos into your wedding day!

The beauty of having an engagement shoot is also in the stunning results that you’re given: the photographs!

Your engagement photos can be incorporated into many different aspects of your wedding, from invitations to save the dates—and even wedding decor! By utilising your pictures before and during your wedding day (and, of course, to reminisce upon afterwards, too!) not only are you celebrating different chapters of your lives, but it also adds that extra special personal touch to your big day!

Ways to include your engagement photos could be:

  • Through wedding invites and/or save-the-date cards.
  • Thank-you cards for your guests, or even wedding favours like candles or personalised chocolate boxes.
  • Enlarged photos can be displayed at your venue or incorporate a slideshow that plays throughout your reception.
  • Creating a custom photo book for all of your guests to sign.

5. Finally, your engagement deserves to be celebrated!

It really is as simple as that.

Getting engaged is a beautiful thing! And you deserve every opportunity to shout about it from the rooftops to anyone who will listen. Practicality aside, an engagement shoot is a celebration of this exciting, pivotal time in your relationship. It’s a celebration of your true, genuine love for one another and marks the beginning of your next greatest adventure in life!

An engagement can sometimes be overshadowed by the preparation and anticipation of your wedding day, but it deserves its own little moment too.

There are so many emotions that you must be feeling, and your heart is bursting with love and excitement—why wouldn’t you want to celebrate that?
